Kinsmen Club honours fallen Canadian heroes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Winnipeg, MB /KINSMENCLUBOFWPG/ – A tour that’s attracted the likes of generals, politicians and members of royalty; the Portraits of Honour tour, exclusively brought to you by Kin Canada, is now set to visit Winnipeg for one day only.

On September 28th, 2011, the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg will bring the forty foot mural depicting the 157 fallen heroes in artist Dave Sopha’s brilliant and engaging display of courage as it begins its parade route at Shaw Park before arriving at the Forks Market for a celebration of Canadian bravery, honouring all of our Canadian Forces members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“This mural depicts the human face of our mission in Afghanistan”, says Tim McKay, Host Committee Chair at Kin Canada. “These brave men and women volunteered to serve a cause bigger than themselves and we want to do something to not only remember, but honour, their sacrifice”. When asked about the 6500+ volunteer hours it took to complete this project, artist Dave Sopha says “it started as a painting but as I got to know the stories, that changed. This became a passion and labour of love to remember the people who served our country”.

Along with the artist and members of Kin Canada, the event will be attended by the families of the five Manitobans who lost their lives serving our country.  In addition to representatives from City Hall and the Province, officials from the RCMP, Winnipeg Police and Canadian Forces will be on hand to pay their respects.

In addition to being able to view this spectacular mural, the public will have the once in a lifetime chance to see the original Seventh Book of Remembrance which for the first time in history, has been permitted to travel outside of Ottawa. The book, which will be accompanied by officers from Veterans Affairs, contains the names of over 1700 soldiers, sailors and aircrew that have lost their lives since 1947.

Members of the public are invited to the dedication ceremony taking place at the Forks Market beginning at 12:30pm on September 28th.
