Chancellor Elementary School and the Parents Association in the area have been fundraising to build a new playground on the school grounds for the past 2 years.
In the mid-1980s, playstructures were built using a type of treated lumber. This lumber releases chemicals into the soil and gravel, including dangerously high levels of arsenic. The arsenic and other chemicals are released into the air whenever the ground and gravel is move around, for example, by children running and playing.
Unfortunately, the City of Winnipeg only pays for the complete removal of the playstructure. They will not provide any funds for a new structure.
The Parents Association has worked hard over the past 2 years to raise $40,000.00 for the playground. The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg will donate up to $20,000.00 towards the remaining cost of the playstructure.
