At least one in six adult Manitobans has severe difficulty using written materials to perform routine tasks. Another one in six has moderate difficulty. Low literacy costs Canadian society approximately $10.7 billion annually, with Manitoba’s share of this cost adding up to over $375 million each year.
The late broadcaster Peter Gzowski founded the PGIs in 1986. To date they?ve raised more than $7 million for adult learners, including more than $240,000 in Manitoba. The funds raised support the LEARN line, learner bursaries and Literacy Partners of Manitoba lending library.
